29 October 2024 – EMBO, the National Science and Technology Council and Academia Sinica in Taiwan today signed an associate membership agreement to strengthen collaboration between excellent life scientists in Europe and Taiwan. This extends the cooperation between EMBO, the EMBO funding organization EMBC, the National Science and Technology Council and Academia Sinica that began in 2012.
As a result of the agreement, researchers based in Taiwan can apply for all EMBO Programmes and activities to fund and support scientists, and European researchers can take advantage of the mobility funds offered by EMBO for research exchanges with Taiwan. This includes postdoctoral fellowships, scientific exchange grants, access to the EMBO Young Investigator Network, funding for courses and workshops and more.
“The Associate Membership agreement provides great opportunities for life scientists in Europe and Taiwan to expand their international connections. 13 scientists based in Taiwan have already been selected as EMBO Young Investigators and Global Investigators. We are proud that such excellent scientists are part of the EMBO network. We look forward to growing this community further,” says Fiona Watt, EMBO Director.
“We are delighted to strengthen our long-standing partnership with EMBC and EMBO with this agreement. Taiwan has a vibrant scientific community that will become even more accessible to European researchers and vice versa,” says James C. Liao, President of Academia Sinica and EMBO Associate Member. “International cooperation is key to scientific progress and together, we can go from strength to strength.”
Major life science centres in Taiwan include, among others, Academia Sinica, National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University and National Cheng Kung University. Taiwan has several national-level initiatives in the life and health sciences field, including pandemic prevention, precision health and regenerative medicine.
EMBO Global Activities seeks to promote international cooperation in life science research beyond Europe by fostering exchange and collaboration. Other international partners include Associate Member States India and Singapore, and the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) of Chile as a cooperation partner. EMBO also has an agreement with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
