15 September 2021 – Review Commons is listed in the top ten projects for Science Breakthrough of the Year in the category of Science and Innovation Management, announced by the Falling Walls Foundation. Falling Walls is a global hub that connects science, business and society. Their annual awards invite scientists at institutions, universities, companies and foundations around the world to highlight their most innovative and impressive work in one of ten categories.
The jury, chaired by Helga Nowotny, President Emeritus of the European Research Council, selected Review Commons as one of the ten most impressive entries in their category of Science and Innovation Management, which looks for novel and game-changing projects in academia and research-driven companies.
Review Commons, which launched in December 2019, provides access to expert peer review for preprint manuscripts in the field of life sciences. Ordinarily, peer review is carried out following submission to a journal and considers the journal’s own criteria of suitability or “journal fit” as part of its assessment. Review Commons is journal-independent and focuses on the scientific content of manuscripts, resulting in peer reviews that can be published alongside preprints on a preprint server such as bioRxiv or medRxiv and can be transferred between journals, including the 17 partner journals and publishers* that accept submissions directly from Review Commons.
Review Commons is proving to be something special in scientific publishing.
Thomas Lemberger, Review Commons project leader
Thomas Lemberger, Review Commons project leader at EMBO, comments: “Review Commons is proving to be something special in scientific publishing. It brings added trust to preprints and added efficiency to traditional publishing. It is very satisfying to see this innovation being recognised.”
