25 March 2025 – On 16 December, EMBO hosted a panel discussion Sustainable Life Science Research: Best Practices and Funders’ Role at the CellBio24 conference in San Diego to bring together scientists and funders from the US and Europe to discuss opportunities and challenges of working together towards sustainable research.
The session presented what researchers can do in the lab and discussed how funders can promote environmental sustainability in the life sciences. In particular:
- Hear from a funder’s perspective on how they intend to promote environmental sustainability in laboratories, including how sustainability considerations can be integrated as requirements into funding schemes.
- Get practical examples for your own labs and how you can support and empower other scientists.
The event was designed for a broad audience including:
- Individuals at any career stage and in a variety of roles who would like to learn more about environmentally sustainable life science research practices.
- Researchers who would like to learn how funders plan to promote environmentally sustainable research.
- Early career researchers and lab managers who would like to learn what they can do in the lab.
- Senior scientists and university management staff interested in strategies to reduce their carbon footprint and save energy and consumable costs.
The discussions were moderated by Fiona Watt, Director of EMBO.
Panellists were the EMBO sustainability award winner 2024 Martin Farley (UK Research and Innovation), Matthew Buechner (National Science Foundation), Jordan Raff (University of Oxford), Julie Welburn (University of Edinburgh) and Philipp Weber (EMBO).
The panellists’ presentations are available upon request.
