12 March 2024 – An information event for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers took place at the Biomedical Sciences Research Center (BSRC) Alexander Fleming in Vari, Greece, on 22 February as part of the initiative to increase participation in the EMBO Programmes. It was co-organized by EMBO and former EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow Antigone Dimas, who is a group leader at the BSRC Alexander Fleming.
The 50 participants, 20 of whom joined remotely, received information about EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships and other funding schemes supporting life scientists in Greece from Daniele Viarisio, senior programme officer at EMBO. Maria Polychronidou, senior scientific editor at EMBO Press, provided an introduction to publishing with EMBO Press. Current EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow Vasilis Papadogiannis from the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Spain, shared his experience with the attending early career researchers. They also participated in two Q&A sessions for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
The event concluded with a lively roundtable discussion with EMBO Member George Kollias, professor and director of the department of physiology at the medical school of the University of Athens and associated researcher at the BSRC Alexander Fleming, EMBO Member Charalambos Savakis, professor emeritus at the University of Crete and adjunct researcher at the BSRC Alexander Fleming, former EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow Margarita Zacharogianni, now senior medical writer at Syneos Health, and Vasilis Papadogiannis.
It was preceded by three days of EMBO Training on communicating research, fellowship application and writing.
