21 November 2024 – At the invitation of EMBO Member Noel Lowndes of the University of Galway, EMBO staff visited Dublin, Cork and Galway from 11 – 12 November 2024 for a roadshow to raise awareness of EMBO and the various funding opportunities and support schemes it offers the Irish scientific community.
The tour began at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin and included talks by former EMBO Council Chair Matthew Freeman, on the EMBO funding opportunities, on research integrity and responsible research assessment, a session on publishing and EMBO Press, and a scientific talk by newly elected EMBO Member Uri Frank from the University of Galway describing his work on the spiny polyp Hydractinia. This was followed by a roundtable discussion on career prospects. EMBO Members Adrian Hill and Leonie Young joined Noel Lowndes and Matthew Freeman to answer questions about developing a successful career in academia versus industry and coping with loneliness and stress.
In Cork, the sessions were hosted and moderated by EMBO Member Ruth Massey from University College Cork. Daniel Klimmeck, Senior Editor at EMBO Journal, gave a talk to the packed Aula Maxima at Galway University. After brief presentations on the goals of EMBO, the fellowships and grants it provides and publishing in EMBO Press journals, a lively Q&A session ensued.
As a country, Ireland has been slightly underrepresented within the EMBO community. “EMBO Members in Ireland welcomed the visit and the opportunity to spread the word about the organization,” said Daniel Klimmeck. The three events reached more than 150 scientists in Ireland.
