Head of Information Support and Resources at EMBO, Alejandro says he and his colleagues see their mandate as going beyond maintaining a functioning IT infrastructure. “We want to help our peers by developing software solutions for the work they do.” Tightly integrated within the organization, the team are well versed with the breadth and depth of the work done at EMBO and readily bring their expertise and perspective to projects lead by staff from across the organization. As head of the group, Alejandro’s role revolves around managing the team’s resources and projects, but he also enjoys advising other groups involved in the EMBO Programmes how to utilise technological solutions for their goals. “We have the opportunity to help shape the future of EMBO and it is fun to collaborate with such interesting people,” he says.
We want to help our peers by developing software solutions for the work they do
Ever since school, Alejandro knew he wanted to work with computers. After University Alejandro worked in a range of roles and work environments including as a freelancer and in start-ups. But at some point, it was time for a change he says. “I was looking for somewhere where I could work in larger teams and contribute to something more meaningful.” Now he is excited that his work is helping support researchers in the life sciences. Even though the style and pace of work is quite different to previous roles, he says he is always using the skills and tools he acquired along the way.
For example, he introduced agile methodologies to his team. “Agile methods are central to how start-ups work, but they work well for us too – you just have to adapt them.” Working as a freelancer he says he learnt a lot of managerial skills, even if he did not manage a team. “I was the developer, account manager, project manager, cleaner – all in one!”
It’s a really pleasant place to be
With its flat hierarchy, space for open communication and international community, topped with a lively campus atmosphere, Alejandro finds working at EMBO very enriching. “It’s a really pleasant place to be.”
