23 February 2023 – As of this year, group leaders who are currently establishing or have recently established a laboratory in Greece, Hungary or Luxembourg can apply for several years of financial backing via the EMBO Installation Grant scheme. This scheme provides life scientists at the beginning of their independent scientific careers with funding, networking opportunities and training to bolster them while they establish research groups in participating countries. Applications are currently being accepted, now through 15 April 2023.
Installation grantees receive an annual grant of 50,000 euros for three to five years. They are also integrated into the EMBO Young Investigator Network, which provides access to extensive networking and training opportunities in addition to assistance in establishing new collaborations. Every grantee receives training in lab leadership and in the responsible conduct of research, and can access funding for organizing conferences. The staff in each recipient’s research group can access exclusive training, the EMBL Core Facilities and travel grants to enable participation in scientific meetings. Grantees can also apply for grants of up to 10,000 euros per year from EMBO.
In early 2023, the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (Greece), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Hungary) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (Luxembourg) joined the funding bodies from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal and Türkiye in offering this support to researchers establishing laboratories in their countries. Installation grants aim to attract talent and strengthen the life sciences community within the participating countries.
The grants are co-funded by the ministry or funding agency in each participating country and EMBC, the intergovernmental organization comprising 30 members states that funds the EMBO Programmes. The installation grant scheme had its first call for applications in 2006, after having been accepted as a Special Project of EMBC in 2005.
