24 May 2018 – The annual Young Investigator Meeting is a key component of practical and networking support that young group leaders receive as part of the programme. Participants, who are all former or current EMBO Young Investigators and EMBO Installation Grantees, present their research, learn more about EMBO’s support and activities and meet each other in an informal setting.
This year, the meeting took place from 16 to 18 May at the Vienna BioCenter in Austria. The meetings rotate between different locations in EMBC Member States, where they are hosted by programme members, and Heidelberg, Germany.
65 young group leaders from across Europe, Taiwan and Singapore came together for three days of scientific discussions and informal networking opportunities. Each attendee presented their work in a short talk. In addition, Programme Manager Gerlind Wallon gave an overview of the financial and practical support programme members receive. EMBO Head of Scientific Publications Bernd Pulverer introduced EMBO Press, its five journals and activities.
Two additional sessions focused on the importance and relevance of responsible conduct of research. Leonard Freedman, President of the Global Biological Standards Institute, presented a keynote lecture titled ‘Closing the reproducibility gap with standards and best practices’. He also took part in a panel discussion on reproducibility in science, chaired by Bernd Pulverer. The other panelists were Mark Petronczki, Boehringer Ingelheim RCV GmbH & Co KG, Vienna, Austria, Claudine Kraft, Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, Germany and David Keays, Research Institute of Molecular Pathology, Vienna, Austria.
Structured and informal networking sessions rounded off the programme and included a speed networking session and a tour of the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
