Elizabeth Blackburn & Frans de Waal to MEET THE PRESS in Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain, 31 August 2010 – The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is delighted to welcome Elizabeth Blackburn and Frans de Waal as keynote and special lecturers at The EMBO Meeting 2010 which opens in Barcelona this Saturday 4 September and continues until Tuesday 7 September.

 

Following her keynote lecture on Sunday morning, Elizabeth Blackburn – awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2009 for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase – will Meet the Press on Sunday 5 September from 13:30 to 14:30 in Press Room 1 on Level 1 of the Palau de Congressos.

 

Frans de Waal – acclaimed ethologist and biologist known for his work on the social intelligence of primates and author of popular books including his latest, The Age of Empathy – will Meet the Press in a later exclusive session on Sunday 5 September from 16:30 to 17:15 in Press Room 1 on Level 1 of the Palau de Congressos. His special lecture to conference participants will follow at 18:00 in the Auditorium.

 

The conference is packed with presentations from more than 140 speakers on topics that span the broad spectrum of molecular biology. More than 700 posters showcase recent results that are advancing the life sciences.

 

Further conference highlights include:

  • Saturday's opening lecture Life and Death of a Microbial Community by Richard Losick from Harvard University US.
  • Marc Vidal from the Center for Cancer Systems Biology (CSSB) gives a plenary lecture Interactome Networks & Human Disease.
  • 21 workshops include:
    • Stem cells & regeneration with JC Izpisúa Belmonte from the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMRB).
    • Cancer genomics & stem cells with Mariano Barbacid from the Spanish National Cancer Centre (CNIO).
    • Next-generation sequencing: technologies & biological insights and Molecular systems biology.
  • Two award ceremonies will recognize leading researchers for contributions they have made to the life sciences.
    • Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine 2010
      • Michel Haissaguerre – Origin & treatment of atrial & ventricular fibrillation
      • Austin Smith – Design principles of pluripotency
    • EMBO Gold Medal 2010
      • Jason W. Chin – Reprogramming the code of life
