Scientists to set up in the Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal
EMBO Installation Grants provide funding and support
Heidelberg, Germany, 9 December 2009 – The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) has identified five young life scientists to receive EMBO Installation Grants, a scheme that aims to strengthen science in selected European states investing in their research infrastructures. The grants will help five scientists to relocate and set up their laboratories in the Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal.
EMBO appoints Bernd Pulverer as Head of Scientific Publication

Pulverer will lead the development and execution of publication strategy in support of the organization’s peer-reviewed research journals.

EMBO welcomes 66 leading life scientists as members
HEIDELBERG, 19 OCTOBER 2009 – The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) today announced the election of 66 leading life scientists to its membership. Sixty of the recognized researchers are based in Europe and neighbouring countries, while six distinguished scientists from Australia, Japan and the US receive the honour of associate membership. In total, EMBO membership now comprises 1,420 of the world's foremost molecular biologists.
Maria Leptin appointed next Director of EMBO

HEIDELBERG, GERMANY, 30 SEPTEMBER 2009 - The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) today announced the appointment of Professor Maria Leptin as the next EMBO Director from 1 January 2010. Maria Leptin will succeed Professor Hermann Bujard who retires from EMBO at the end of 2009 in order to devote more time to his own research interests.

Lisbon researcher gets set-up grant
EMBO Installation Grant provides Lars Jansen with funding & support
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY, 23 JULY 2009 – Lars Jansen from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (Gulbenkian Institute for Science) in Oeiras, near Lisbon, is the recipient of an EMBO Installation Grant assisting him to establish a new research group in Portugal. Dr. Jansen will receive funding beginning in 2009, similar to the previous seven awardees announced in December 2008.
Olivier Voinnet awarded 2009 EMBO Gold Medal
French researcher establishes RNA silencing as new field of plant biology
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY, 22 APRIL 2009 - Olivier Voinnet from the CNRS Institute of Plant Molecular Biology in Strasbourg, France, is awarded the 2009 EMBO Gold Medal. The researcher receives this medal for his pioneering work on the mechanisms and roles of gene silencing via RNA in plants.
Howy Jacobs appointed as Senior Editor of EMBO reports
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY, 31 MARCH 2009 - The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) announces the appointment of Howy Jacobs as Senior Editor of EMBO reports (www.emboreports.org). Howy Jacobs succeeds Frank Gannon who has served as senior editor of the journal since its inception in 2000.

Heidelberg, Germany, 17 February 2009 - The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) announced Anne Houdusse, head of the Structural Motility Team, CNRS/Institute Curie, Paris, France, as the winner of the FEBS/EMBO Women in Science Award for 2009. The selection committee honoured Anne Houdusse’s outstanding contributions to the field of structural biology and the understanding of the molecular mechanism of action of myosins.
