Leadership & oversight
EMBO actions are directed and guided by members of the organization. Scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the life sciences are nominated and elected annually by the membership.
Professor Maria Leptin is Director of EMBO. Professor Leptin was elected as a Member of EMBO in 1996. She served as chair of the EMBO Membership Committee (2005 – 2007), as a member of the EMBO Membership & Publications Committee (2002 – 2004) and was elected to EMBO Council in 2008.
EMBO Council is the governing body of EMBO, responsible for ensuring the development of the organization. It consists of 15 members who serve for a period of three years and who may be re-elected for one additional term of office. The Chair of EMBO Council is Detlef Weigel and the Vice-Chair is Richard Treisman. The Secretary General of EMBO is Paul Nurse.
The European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), an intergovernmental organization comprising 27 member states, is the funding body of EMBO. The EMBC was founded in 1969 to support the activities of EMBO. Both the EMBC and EMBO share a common commitment to quality research and cooperation at the European level.
